Alexandrite Gemstone Meaning & History

Alexandrite is the birth stone for June, a type of chrysoberyl. The gem was discovered on April 17, 1834 by the Finnish mineralogist Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld. He decided to name the gem in honor of Russian Emperor Alexander II.

A gemstone similar to alexandrite can be made in a laboratory. That kind of stone is called synthetic or simulated alexandrite.

June birthstone color ~ Purple & Green-Blue

Different types of light change color.  This is called the "Alexandrite effect".  A piece of alexandrite, green-blue in daylight and reddish-purple in incandescent light.

Where is Alexandrite found?

Alexandrite has been found in Russia, Brazil, India, Madagascar and Sri Lanka.
